Dark Side of Cyberspace Images

by

Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D.

You and I may not feel it, but we are all at the beginning of the Information Age. Like a double edged sword, the advantages and disadvantages of Information and Communications Technology are clear. If someone says to me again, “Dr. Nuccitelli, what do you want us to do, turn off the internet?”, I think I will throw my digital devices out the window. For the record, I love cyberspace and grateful for its many benefits. What I don’t understand is how little is being done to teach children and the rest of society about the dark side of cyberspace and the typologies of iPredator.

At times, it feels like society has buried its head in the sand in relationship to internet safety and cyber attack prevention. It is truly unfortunate that the vast majority of online users do not pay attention to information security and cyber attack prevention until they, their loved ones or wallet are cyber attacked. Not only do I think basic internet safety, Digital Citizenship and how to conduct oneself in cyberspace be taught in schools, but it should be a national priority. For now, the best we can do, for those of us who give a damn, is to encourage awareness.

To achieve this aim, pasted below are twenty images and quotes to help think about how to protect yourself, loved ones and business. All the images are free to download, share and edit for educational purposes. For most devices, simply right click on the image and click “save as” to download to your device. No personal information or email address is required to print out or save. I present you my novice graphic design skills and philosophical ramblings.

Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D.-San Bernardino Mass Shooting

Listen to Michael Nuccitelli Psy.D. as he is interviewed on America Now with Meghan McCain regarding the San Bernardino Mass Shooting on December 2, 2015. On December 3, 2015, Dr. Nuccitelli was interviewed by Meghan McCain during her three-hour national radio broadcast discussing the San Bernardino Shooting tragedy. As you will hear during this brief interview, Ms. McCain asks Dr. Nuccitelli provocative questions surrounding the husband and wife team who brutally murdered fourteen people and wounded twenty-one.

Although the assailant couple, Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik, pledged their allegiance to an Islamic State leader on Facebook, authorities were not prepared to conclude this travesty was a terrorist attack or workplace related at the time of this show. In response to Ms. McCain’s question regarding the ability of terrorist groups to use social media as an influential tactic for motivating other terrorists, Dr. Nuccitelli affirmed her query. Concurring with Ms. McCain, Michael Nuccitelli Psy.D. strongly suspects the San Bernardino Mass Shooting at the Inland Regional Center was an act of terrorism and not simply an act of workplace violence. Dr. Nuccitelli would like to say Thank you to America Now with Meghan McCain for inviting him to be their guest. To listen to his interview with Ms. McCain, simply click on the radio image here.

Dr. Nuccitelli presents his belief that cyberspace is becoming, or already is, an extension of cyberspace. He strongly believes that cyberspace has effects upon the human mind not yet explained by modern science. For those interested in learning a little about what Dr. Nuccitelli is referring to, it is recommended to Goggle the terms Reality-Virtuality Continuum, Disinhibition Effect and the works of Carl Jung. If the San Bernardino shooters were influenced by their online activities, Dr. Nuccitelli believes his two iPredator sub-constructs, iPredator Bridge and ODDOR were involved.

Since the beginning of human civilization, ideology has driven people to commit atrocious acts of violence. In the Information Age, the seeds of militant ideology are easily nourished. Once a person or group of people are validated in their extreme views, the probability of implementing their violent plans grows exponentially. For a yet to be determined reason, cyberspace has an uncanny ability to speak to the dark side of human consciousness. Living in the Information Age, Cyber Terrorism and iPredators will become permanent fixtures of the human experience. With each passing year, homeland security must focus on cyber attack prevention.

“The Information Age technocentric concept of being “connected” is actually a paradox of disconnection causing us to lose our instinctual drives for social cohesion, allegiance and selflessness. As our dependency upon Information and Communications Technology [ICT] grows, spreading throughout our collective human consciousness, the less we care for our neighbors and the more we delude ourselves into thinking that online connections are far more valuable than realty based relationships.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. ipredator-internet-radio-image

ODDOR

Offline Distress Dictates Online Response (ODDOR) is a sub-tenet of iPredator, which posits that offline psychological functioning directly influences one’s online interactions. Whether someone is an online assailant, cyber attack target or both, ODDOR does not discriminate. ODDOR postulates that temporary and long-standing psychological states can significantly taint an online user’s behaviors and interpretations. Perceptually isolated, ignorance of the existence of ODDOR and experiencing atypical affective and cognitive states increases the probability of being targeted by an online assailant. In addition to being at a greater risk of being cyber attacked, ODDOR influences an online user to partake in destructive and self-destructive online activities.

If a person is self-aware and reasonably healthy, their levels of ODDOR are less likely to become problematic. Just as self-awareness acts as a buffer between mental health and dysfunction, the same holds true for ODDOR. An online user’s risks of engaging in destructive and self-destructive behaviors are greatly diminished by monitoring one’s attitude before and during ICT usage. The ODDOR factors online users must be mindful of include

  • Using ICT in an altered state of consciousness.
  • Using ICT with an amplified sense of optimism or fatalism
  • Using ICT to explore deviant or dark internal fantasies.
  • Using ICT in a heightened state of distress, anger or carelessness.
  • Using ICT with a medical condition that impacts intellectual functioning.
  • Using ICT during affective states that are isolation or rejection themed.
  • Using ICT during interpersonal conflicts and environmental stress.

ODDOR has minimal impact when an online user is cognizant of how others can misinterpret their perceptual biases and color the information they aggregate, disseminate and exchange. ODDOR poses a minimal risk when an online user’s faculties responsible for self-preservation are functioning properly in all online environments.

Dark Psychology

Dark Psychology: Dark Psychology is the study of the human condition as it relates to the psychological nature of people to prey upon other people motivated by criminal and/or deviant drives that lack purpose and general assumptions of instinctual drives and social sciences theory. All of humanity has the potentiality to victimize humans and other living creatures. While many restrain or sublimate this tendency, some act upon these impulses. Dark Psychology seeks to understand those thoughts, feelings, perceptions and subjective processing systems that lead to predatory behavior that is antithetical to contemporary understandings of human behavior.

Dark Psychology assumes that criminal, deviant and abusive behaviors are purposive and have some rational, goal-oriented motivation 99% of the time. It is the remaining 1%, Dark Psychology parts from Adlerian theory and Teleology. Dark Psychology encompasses all that makes us who we are in relationship to our dark side. All cultures, faiths and humanity have this proverbial cancer. From the moment we are born to the time of death, there is a side hidden within us that some have called “Evil” and others have defined as criminal, deviant or psychopathic.

Dark Psychology posits there are people who commit these same acts and do so not for power, money, sex, retribution or any other known purpose. They commit horrid acts without a goal. Simplified, their ends do not justify their means. There are people who violate and injure others for the sake of doing so. Within in all of us is this potential. A potential to harm others without cause, explanation, or purpose is the area explored. Dark Psychology assumes this dark potential is incredibly complex and even more difficult to define.

michael-nuccitelli-psy.d.-reviewtechusa-ipredator-1100x600

iPredator

iPredator: A person, group or nation who, directly or indirectly, engages in exploitation, victimization, coercion, stalking, theft or disparagement of others using Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. iPredators are driven by deviant fantasies, desires for power and control, retribution, religious fanaticism, political reprisal, psychiatric illness, perceptual distortions, peer acceptance or personal and financial gain. iPredators can be any age or gender and are not bound by economic status, race, religion or national heritage. iPredator is a global term used to distinguish anyone who engages in criminal, coercive, deviant or abusive behaviors using ICT. Central to the construct is the premise that Information Age criminals, deviants and the violently disturbed are psychopathological classifications new to humanity.

Whether the offender is a cyberbully, cyberstalker, cyber harasser, internet troll, cybercriminal, online sexual predator, cyber terrorist, online child pornography consumer and distributor or engaged in internet defamation or nefarious online deception, they fall within the scope of iPredator. The three criteria used to define an iPredator include:

  • A self-awareness of causing harm to others, directly or indirectly, using ICT.
  • The usage of ICT to obtain, tamper with, exchange and deliver harmful information.
  • A general understanding of Cyberstealth used to engage in criminal or deviant activities or to profile, identify, locate, stalk and engage a target.

Unlike human predators prior to the Information Age, iPredators include the multitude of benefits offered by Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. These assistances include exchange of information over long distances, rapidity of information exchanged and the seemingly infinite access to data available. Malevolent in intent, iPredators rely on their capacity to deceive others using ICT in the abstract and artificial electronic universe known as cyberspace. Therefore, as the internet naturally offers all ICT users anonymity, if they decide, iPredators actively design online profiles and diversionary tactics to remain undetected and untraceable.

Cyberstealth, a sub-tenet of iPredator, is a covert method by which iPredators attempt to establish and sustain complete anonymity while they engage in ICT activities planning their next assault, investigating innovative surveillance technologies or researching the social profiles of their next target. Concurrent with the concept of Cyberstealth is iPredator Victim Intuition [IVI]. An iPredator’s IVI is their aptitude to sense a target’s ODDOR [Offline Distress Dictates Online Response], online & offline vulnerabilities, psychological weaknesses, technological limitations, increasing their success of a cyber-attack with minimal ramifications.

Peter Pinho Radio Network-PPRN-Internet Radio Host Trolls

On The Peter Pinho Radio Network [PPRN], this writer was a guest expert on April 16, 2014, scheduled to discuss the Darkside of Cyberspace, Online Psychopathy and Internet Trolls. The Peter Pinho Radio Network defines their 3-4 hour show as uncensored and adult humor themed. Having never heard of the  Peter Pinho Radio Network show, this writer emailed them a guest introduction responding to their post on  www.RadioGuestList.com seeking guests. Without going into details, this writer was scheduled for a telephonic interview just as he had done many times before. The show announcement and podcast link is as follows:

The Peter Pinho Radio Network

Show Title: CT Sirens and Beat City Beauties Live

Show Date:April 16, 2014

Time:7pm-11pm EST

PPRN Show Direct Link

This writer’s appearance and what occurred both during and after the show was the motivating force to write this article . Not having listened to any of their past shows prior to scheduling, this writer was embarrassed, frustrated and ashamed for having been a guest. Not that they shocked or angered this writer, but having been called, emailed and personally advised by various associates was where  this writer’s humiliation stemmed. This writer takes full responsibility for agreeing to appear on their show and not ending contact once the Peter Pinho Radio Network’s  unprofessional agenda was quickly observed. It is up to the reader and online listener to decide if their claims of being the best of news, entertainment, comedy, sports and talk radio show online. For anyone who may embark on educating others within the realm of internet radio, three tips are as follows:

  1. I did not listen to three different shows, for at least 10 minutes, to get a feel for who they were, what they were about and how they treated their guests prior to agreeing to be a guest
  2. I should have never answered their call in the first place, immediately hung up or stated I could not stay after the first break once hearing what they define as an adult comedy themed talk show. As advised by some other radio broadcast hosts who later listened to a portion of the show, I should have ended the interview as quickly as possible, given they had little interest in educating their listeners and clearly was not a real information show.
  3. I should have never dropped to their level and used profanity, as they did, to answer the few questions I was asked. Even though I thought it would  fit with their style, my use of profanity was unprofessional.

Internet Troll Definition

Internet Trolls and Internet Trolling (aka, Cyber Harassment) are terms describing online users who harass, control, provoke or habitually disparage a child, adult, business or group using Information and Communications Technology (ICT). Usually not knowing their targets, trolls use ICT to provoke, inflame or defame others they rarely know offline or online. Provided for the reader below is a brief Internet Troll definition. Internet Trolls are a subset of aggressive online users who engage in cyber harassment. The primary difference is Internet trolls typically do not know the person they are targeting and will likely never meet that person offline. Internet Troll and Trolling are very subjective terms and used to describe many similar, but variable, events. For example, online users can troll other online users or a group of online users who share similar qualities. This is a behavioral term describing an online behavior that does not necessarily have to be motivated for criminal or nefarious reasons.

Internet Radio Show Trolls

Internet radio show trolling is a play on words for describing  The Peter Pinho Radio Network and how they use cyberspace and Information and Communications Technology to deprecate and defame their guests and a variety of issues. Although Internet Trolls typically target online users randomly and have never met or spoken to their targets, the Peter Pinho Radio Network show is close in typology. Just as internet trolls, the PPRN hosts gain personal satisfaction from jeering their guests. Referencing this definition of an Internet Troll above,  PPRN fits the profile quite well. If any of the PPRN hosts do come across this post, this writer strongly suspects they will take the information presented as a compliment and badge of honor. Just as true Internet Trolls, the Peter Pinho Radio Network hosts will use this article as a declaration of their radio broadcast irreverence.

Unfortunately, PPRN and the rest of  Internet Radio Show Trolls are not supported or viewed as being skillful in their juvenile antics. This writer has no ill will towards the Peter Pinho Radio Network, other than having no idea why they wanted to book this forensic psychologist  to discuss his cyber criminology constructs. There was no introduction of whom this writer was, what he did, his internet safety website, constructs or means to contact for their few listeners. If anything, PPRN uses their guests for jeering and provocation. Not that this writer is devoid of a sense of humor, but online sexual predation, cyberstalking, internet trolling and online psychopathy are not topics to be mocked.

The prime reason for this writer posting this article is to educate readers on the dangers of defaming others online. As the reader will learn below, real Internet Trolls are not all online users simply teasing unknown targets. Both at the beginning,  during, when they hung up on this writer, and soon after PPRN was finished, this writer was sent two emails by an unknown Internet Troll. For the first time in his professional career, the Troll’s message was not attacking this writer, but the Peter Pinho Radio Network.

Not but one, but two emails were sent to this writer anonymously. Internet radio show trolls need to know the information they share may be heard by those trolling themselves seeking out targets. It is not that shows like PPRN need to change their broadcast format, but temper their shallow tactics and habitual attempts to embarrass others. Most disconcerting for PPRN is the Troll’s last line in his first message. There is no way to know for sure if one day PPRN will be habitually attacked, but the troll’s seconds email, with the last minute of the show when one of the hosts called this writer a troll is an example of what they need to temper.

Below are the two emails from the Internet Troll who wrote during the show and soon after the show’s end. The emails were untraceable and he/she may have read this writer’s show announcement from the social media posts. Although not targeting this writer, the last sentence is why this post was written to educate others on the importance of digital citizenship and internet safety.

Troll’s First Email

“Gotta give ya credit Doc! Because of wannabees like PPRN is why we troll. I listened for bout 15 minutes, threw up, then quickly swallowed my puke. Sorry, if I wanted to listen to a triad of complete assholes like those three, I’d spend a Friday night at a tranny bar in Staten Island  Worst internet show I’ve ever heard. Like being in a room with 4 country ass wannabees. Betcha if I listened to their podcast archives, every fucking show includes beans, porn, tits, swallowing cum and degradation. It wouldn’t take me but 5 minutes to find something proving tout themselves as the next Howard Stern or shock jock troop.

And you say we’re psychopathic? No wonder why they only get 20 people to listen live to their horseshit. Like 95% of all internet radio shows, they tell everyone most of their listeners are “archived listeners” and they are in the 1000’s. Tomorrow morning, I’ll be sure to pass on their podcast so everyone else can hear what little whitecracker bitches they are. Guaranteed, they’re all white ass mutha fuckers, pathetically ugly and live to fuck with people disguised as radio comedy. I may occasionally troll, but even I wouldn’t waste my time on their fecal minds. Let them know they have nothing to worry about being trolled, cause no one will waste their time. I’d rather be caught fucking a 4 year old than having my friends know I actually trolled them. You watch, before they end their carnie listening circus, they’ll target niggers, fags and trannies.

I also guarantee that once they’re done with you, one of them will say something to make you sound like an asshole. lol…I’m not even a forensic shrink, like you, to predict that shit. And they’re stupid enough to post their Twitter and a fucking Google map showing they’re in Southbury, CT? You’d be an utter asshole to ever go back on their show. If you are stupid enough, let them know one thing.”

iPredator

iPredator: A person, group or nation who, directly or indirectly, engages in exploitation, victimization, coercion, stalking, theft or disparagement of others using Information and Communications Technology [ICT]. iPredators are driven by deviant fantasies, desires for power and control, retribution, religious fanaticism, political reprisal, psychiatric illness, perceptual distortions, peer acceptance or personal and financial gain. iPredators can be any age or gender and are not bound by economic status, race, religion or national heritage. iPredator is a global term used to distinguish anyone who engages in criminal, coercive, deviant or abusive behaviors using ICT.

“The Information Age technocentric concept of being “connected” is a paradox of disconnection causing us to lose control of our instinctual drives for social cohesion, allegiance and selflessness. As our dependency upon Information and Communications Technology (ICT) grows, spreading throughout our collective human consciousness, the less we care for our neighbors and the more we delude ourselves into thinking that online connections are far more valuable than reality based relationships.” Michael Nuccitelli, Psy.D. Donna Garner:
A career educator and author known to so many, taught in Texas classrooms for 33+ years, and was appointed by President Reagan and re-appointed by President George H. Bush to the National Commission on Migrant Education. She also served on the English/Language Arts/Reading writing team for the state of Texas when the curriculum standards were developed in 1995-97. She then became the lead writer of the Texas Alternative Document for ELAR and years later worked unsolicited to help develop the new ELAR standards for Texas. Those so needed standards were adopted in May 2008.

Further, Ms. Garner was the writer/researcher for Scott & White Worth and served as the writer/consultant for an online tutorial to teach eager learners, English proficiency. In the last few years, as a writer, researcher, and publisher of articles covering political, social, and education issues, she has kept the public informed — never wavering from the “bottom line,” better said, “telling people the truth!” When making decisions for the children and youth of our nation, Donna’s work and her tenacity have set the road straight!

In the midst of her activities, Donna Garner has tried not to neglect her family; and she and her husband celebrated their 50th anniversary this last summer. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law and five grandchildren (freshman in college through third grader).

Her passion, so stated, “is to make sure that this and future generations appreciate and uphold the American dream so that all of the children and youth of America will have the opportunity to be successful.” Her dedication has made a difference! Indeed, a true Upton winner!

Antoinette Tuff
is a person and only the person upstairs knows how many student’s lives that she has saved. Confronted with some person who snuck into her school with a weapon, she calmly defused the situation, and saved many lives of many students and teachers. Often it is not the big policy analysts that should be recognized, not the book authors but the people on the front lines of education who today put their lives on the line every day that they enter a school or classroom. Antoinette is a “ bookkeeper “ or “clerk“ in a Decatur, Georgia school that talked rationally to an alleged gunman and convinced this person to surrender to the police. More details can be found on the Internet regarding this wonderful person, who certainly would have given her life for the students in her school.

Dr. Valerie Hill-Jackson:
As a winning 2013 Fulbright scholar hosted by the Center for Critical and Cultural Theory at the School of English Communication and Philosophy at Cardiff University, Dr. Hill- Jackson, is a worthy Upton Sinclair winner. Upton would have loved this story, reminding so many that were loved and were lost decades later, and of the many sacrifices had gone unnoticed.

Fulbright scholars are recipients of a highly competitive, merit-based grant for international educational exchange. The Fulbright award was founded by United States Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946 as a means to facilitate intercultural understanding around the world. Dr. Hill-Jackson is a Clinical Associate Professor at Texas A&M University. Hill-Jackson is a tireless champion of students from marginalized communities and uses her stories about teaching in Camden, N.J. and community endeavors to rally future teachers to focus pedagogy on the voiceless. She is a nationally and university recognized educator having garnered: 2002 AERA/Spencer Award; 2007 Maybelline / People Magazine Women Who Empower Through Education Award; the 2008 Texas A&M University (TAMU) Association of Former Students Award for Distinguished Teaching; 2008 Transfer Camp Namesake; 2010 Student Lead Award for Teaching Excellence (SLATE) at TAMU; 2010 Outstanding Panhellenic Professor; and 2011 National Society of Collegiate Scholars Inspire Integrity Top 10 Finalist award. All of Hill-Jackson’s experiences are uniquely tethered to the advancement of educational justice.

As a scholar of critical teacher education and community studies at Texas A&M University, and knowing the blind-spots of history, she decided it was no longer acceptable for the stories of 70-plus war brides of color to go unheard so she applied for and won a Fulbright scholarship so that she could return and properly research the subject. Tiger Brides: Memories of Love and War from the G.I. Brides of Tiger Bay (in Cardiff, Wales) is the result of several months of interviewing Tiger Bay residents, G.I. brides and their children, local historians, World War 11 experts and anyone else who could help her to piece together the story of wartime black G.I.s and their brides.

The ground breaking documentary “Tiger Brides” was created, narrated, co-produced and co-directed by Dr. Hill-Jackson. It was filmed and co-directed by Anthony and Simon Campbell, of 15th Floor Productions, who were born and raised in Tiger Bay. The inaugural U.S. screening of the documentary will be held in Houston February 2014. Hill-Jackson adds, “the documentary is another example of the lost perspectives of the voiceless. My job as a critical educator is not over until the stories of the under-represented are a part of the national war bride narrative. In this way, history is honored and I can walk the talk for future teachers.”

As a final for the Upton Sinclair recognition is the Houston ISD senior class winners of 186 million dollars in scholarships in 2013! We are grateful for the leadership teams and the great teachers who work with the student winners! The American Dream is alive and well!
